Iowa Caucus Tidbits

I just received a press release from the Clinton campaign that is entirely in Spanish. It’s sent from their normal press address to, from what I can tell, their full press list. This is the first all-Spanish release I have received from a presidential campaign this year, and I find it interesting that they didn’t make more of an effort just to target this release at Spanish-language press. The title of the release is, “PLAN DE SALUD DE CLINTON PROVEERÁ CUIDADOS Y COBERTURA DE CALIDAD PARA MILLONES DE HISPANOS.” Roughly, that means, “Clinton’s plan will provide quality care and coverage for millions of hispanics.” It is as long and as thoroughly footnoted as its English-language counterpart, which went out Monday.

John Deeth got hitched on Friday, and, in true Deeth style, the marriage was a surprise to everyone. But he didn’t liveblog it, and he didn’t even post his write-up of the event until several days later. Regardless, though, congrats, John!

I had a discussion with someone earlier about whether Sen. Barack Obama’s TV ad is comparable in any way to the ad run by fake Congressman Matt Santos during the New Hampshire primary on TV’s The West Wing. I actually thought former Sen. John Edwards’s TV ad after the president’s speech last week was more similar to the Santos ad, which fictionally propelled the fake congressman to his eventual fake nomination victory during a fake fight at the fake Democratic National Convention later in the fake campaign.

But the new Obama ad breaks the Axelrod mold, for sure. A Ben Smith reader suggested that the most important part of the ad is the talk of “decades of division.” I think the most notable part is the statement, “I’ve taken on the drug and insurance companies and won,” because it’s an Edwards line from months ago.
