Brownback Says He Needs Fourth Place in Iowa

Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback participated in an online chat on the Washington Post’s web site today, and he said he will drop out of the 2008 presidential race if he does not place in the top four in the Iowa Caucuses. Brownback represents a state that is only one state away from Iowa, and the Republican caucuses are dominated by social conservatives, who are the Senator’s core constituency. A fourth place finish won’t seem like enough unless the top three are Rep. Tom Tancredo, Rep. Ron Paul, and John Cox.

Here’s the exchange:

Topeka, Kan.: Is it true that you will drop out of the race if you don’t finish in the top 4 in Iowa?

Sen. Sam Brownback: That is correct. I need to finish in that group to move on forward.
